Breakaway and Disengagement Training
We currently deliver this course to individuals working in Mental Health settings, Dementia Care Homes, Secure Transport, and the Learning Disability Care settings. The techniques we deliver in one setting will not be the same in the next.
Course Content:
Duration: 5-6 hours
Prevention Methods: Exploring strategies, methods, processes and practices to reduce distress and prevent behaviours from escalating. Prevention methods should be person-centred and setting-specific.
Dynamic Risk Assessment/ Situational Awareness: We focus on pre-emptive and preventative approaches in order to reduce risk. The ability to risk assess a person and environment is vital.
Use of Force Legislation: We explore setting specific legislation relevant to the use of force and deprivations of liberty, including but not limited to the Mental Capacity Act, Mental Health Act, Human Rights Act, Health and Safety at Work Act, Criminal Law Act, Common Law Reasonable Force, Childrens Act.
Breakaway Techniques
The session incorporates various escape strategies when faced with attempts to grab clothing, wrists, hair or throat. The techniques taught are all non-pain compliant, meaning that they don't cause the aggressor any pain. We understand that some of the behaviours staff encounter are often normally just a means of communicating an unmet need, our response should therefore be proportionate to this.
